The pictures here tell the story – Red-eared Sliders in overcrowded conditions. Two such cases were reported to the SPCA, the first location was at a temple and the second in the common area of an HDB apartment block. |
| Approximately 40,000 Red-eared sliders (a semi-aquatic turtle) are imported into Singapore each month, for the pet trade. Although these animals are only one-and-a-half inches in size as hatchlings in pet shops, they grow to a maximum size of 12 inches and can live for over 30 years. |
| Many of these animals are kept by ignorant owners who end up housing them in plastic tubs or releasing them into the environment, in ponds, reservoirs, or at temples. |
|
| These animals are hardy and can adapt well to our climate and breed successfully. The increase in their numbers in turn pushes out the local, native species, thus affecting the natural balance of the ecosystem. |
|
| NOTE: The SPCA does not encourage the purchase of Red-eared Sliders as pets, due to the long-term commitment needed. |
Cruelty to animals is a crime
In Singapore, cruelty to animals is a crime. Under the Animals and Birds Act, anyone who is found guilty of such an offence including abandonment of any animal, can be imprisoned for up to 12 months, fined up to $10,000, or both.
