Rising
abandonment figures
Many dogs today are purchased and abandoned later when the novelty wears
off. Other reasons of abandonment include impulse buys, puppies outgrowing
their cute appeal to the lack of knowledge of the breed’s care requirements
prior to purchase.

How you can Help
Firstly, you can help by adopting a pet from the SPCA shelter instead of
purchasing one from a pet shop. By adopting, you are consciously making a stand
against abandonment, saving a life and rekindling hope for the shelter animals.
The SPCA has been receiving over 100 pedigree dogs a month, including lost
dogs, of which only one third on average are claimed back. Many of our animals
are in need of loving families and a home. If you know of someone keen on
getting a dog/ pet, then encourage them to adopt instead of buying from a pet
shop. Adoption offers you the opportunity to get acquainted with the dogs and
the other animals at the SPCA Shelter. While at the shelter, feel free to chat
with any SPCA staff/ volunteer to find out more about the animal. Be sure to
stop by the main reception office to get brochures on general pet
care information, adoption information and procedures, etc. Alternatively,
you can also view animals up for adoption at SPCA’s Online
Adoption Gallery prior to visiting the shelter.
Secondly, it pays to do research about the pet you are planning to
adopt. Knowing as much about the animal such as its temperament, history,
health concerns, living requirements; etc will assist with the decision on a
suitable breed to complement your lifestyle, work schedule, living space, etc.
For example, a Jack Russell Terrier is full of energy
and requires a fair bit of play and attention. He may be perfectly suited to
small homes or apartments, as long has he is given daily walks in order to burn
off his energy. HDB
has a list
of HDB approved dog breeds that you can refer to as a guide.
Responsible
Pet Ownership
Having a pet is a lifelong commitment, and
unless you are certain and ready to care for one, you should not rush into the
decision of getting a pet. If you are living with your parents or sharing your
living space with other people, make sure you get consensus and not surprise
anyone by bringing home a pet unannounced. Aside from a lifetime
responsibility, there are financial considerations for vet checks, grooming and
in some cases, behavioural training. The SPCA advises talking to other pet
owners and/ or the SPCA staff to find out more about raising a pet.
Remember to you, he’s just
a dog but to him, you’re everything. There is no better friend!
