Many people may have seen the email circulating horrific pictures of butchered pilot whales and blood-filled waters in the Faroe Islands.
The SPCA supports the RSPCA's (U.K.) stand, and is against the drive hunt for pilot whales that occurs in the Faroe Islands. RSPCA is concerned that the driving of the animals into a bay causes stress, that the killing of the animals is not done humanely and that the hunt is often uncontrolled and is done with no consideration on the environmental or health issues. For instance, the meat contains high levels of pollutants and has been deemed by the Faroese health authorities to cause health problems if taken in large quantities or by pregnant women.
The Faroe Islands are a self governing part of Denmark and are not members of the EU. They are not governed by the EU ban on the commercial taking of whales and dolphins. The drive hunt is not illegal under Faroese legislation and despite it being condemned at international meetings such as the International Whaling Commission, it has been difficult to stop it.
If you are interested in protesting it is best to write to the Danish embassy in Singapore who will forward your letter:
