Since 2001, we have been lobbying the authorities to have regulated and humane slaughter practices for animals like frogs and turtles. This is because the conditions that these animals are housed in are often inadequate and cramped. In addition, they are subjected to unsupervised and possibly unskilled slaughter.

In our opinion, present guidelines by the authorities do not guarantee humane treatment.

The SPCA is seriously concerned for the welfare of these animals as humane slaughter would require certain skills. Currently, even with the existence of guidelines, how is humane slaughter monitored and guaranteed? Unless a skilled person is carrying it out, the animals are bound to suffer.

SPCA acts on STOMP posting 24/01/2009

A STOMPER had posted a picture in early 2008 on STOMP which highlighted overcrowding of crabs (about two tanks packed with about 80 King Crabs) at a Dempsey Road restaurant. The STOMPer was "shocked and "appalled" to see this and said that all living creatures should be at least treated humanely, and that people should stop eating at this restaurant in Dempsey Road.

The SPCA supports this view and thanks the writer for standing up for animals. On visiting the seafood restaurant, the SPCA confirmed this report and referred the case to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) for further action.

Complaints on cruel conditions in supermarket
The SPCA had in the past investigated complaints about the way live animals are housed at supermarkets. We found the conditions appalling and the case has been referred to the AVA, which is now investigating.

Below are the pictures taken by the SPCA at two branches of a supermarket chain in August/September 2007.
