There has been much debate recently in the media on the subject of dog training, since it was announced by the authorities that Rottweilers may have to have compulsory obedience training. This is in the light of there being several incidences of attacks by these dogs in recent years.

The SPCA, in a newspaper report in November 2008, advocated that all types of dogs should be trained as this gives owners the chance to get to know their dogs better, whilst learning to be responsible dog owners.

Whilst on the subject of training, it is important to pick dog trainers that are up-to-date with innovations in dog training and behaviour tools and techniques. They should also employ humane teaching methods which are not harmful to the dog or handler, and avoid the practices of negative reinforcement such as hanging, beating, kicking, shocking or any other training devices that could cause the dog pain or distress. The experience for you and your dog should be enjoyable and you should be comfortable (not pressured) with the training tools used.

Books that are recommended are the following by leading authority Ian Dunbar
