We received a total of 39 complaints against pet shops in 2007. Complaints involved animals in small cages, overcrowding, dirty living conditions and even physical abuse.

The SPCA would like to see conditions in many pet shops improve.

Water bottles continue to be used for dogs which the SPCA finds unacceptable. A lack of ready water supply could pose considerable welfare concerns for the animals which are equipped to lap. Our tropical climate is even more justification that dogs need access to a reasonable amount of drinking water.

Members of public are encouraged to speak up against this practice and to write to the authority which licences and sets the conditions for pet shop operators:
The Head
Animal Welfare Regulations Branch
Agri-food & Veterinary Authority
75 Pasir Panjang Road
Singapore 118507

Other problems that SPCA has received feedback on are highlighted below:
Flooring is not comfortable for puppies to rest on (no proper covering other than mesh/wire).
Grids/netting on floor are too big, especially small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs
Some animals are under glaring lights all day long
Sick animals are sometimes offered at special prices; these animals should be under medication and not displayed for sale
Some pet shops display dogs in cages that are too small.
No designated exercise areas so that dogs can have play time outside of their cages.
Lack of toys/teething objects for puppies
Sick animals should not be displayed for sale
Imported puppies are not sufficiently immunized against diseases before being sold to customers.
Some shops do not clean the cages promptly after animals urinate/defecate
If you see unsatisfactory conditions in a pet shop, please call 6287 5355 and voice your opinion! It would be helpful if you could take pictures, but please do this discreetly. Send the pictures together with your contact details to inspector@spca.org.sg.

For urgent cases, please call to make a report immediately.

The SPCA advises the public not to patronise pet shops that keep their animals in poor conditions.
