Hamsters
1. Can I put two hamsters together?
This will depend on the characteristics of the hamsters. Syrian hamsters tend to be solitary animal – they like to be alone. While dwarf and roboroskis are colony animals – they can live in groups. But if they do fight, it is important to separate them immediately. Fight wounds can lead to serious infections and deaths.
You should also separate male and female hamsters. Hamsters are prolific breeders and you don’t want to have unwanted pregnancy and abandoned hamsters.

2. My hamster climbs about in its cage. Is this a sign of boredom?
Hamster are active creatures thus it is no surprise to see the mini acrobatic climbers about the cage. You can provide your active hamster with tubes to climb around in and a toy or two to keep them entertained. Depending on the type of hamster you have, it will need considerable space. A solid exercise wheel (no open rungs) fixed to the side of the cage will also help your hamsters get their exercise.

3. My hamster bites on the wire bars of its cage. Is this normal behaviour?
Hamsters are alert, bright-eyed creatures and their teeth constantly grow. They need to be able to gnaw on something regularly to prevent the teeth becoming overgrown and the bars of their cage is normally the hardest thing available. Gnawing toys are essential to keep their ever-growing teeth stay at a manageable length. You can try buying chew toys like wooden blocks and mineral sticks which may work. Always consider the safety of your hamster when getting toys - is anything sharp? could it become sharp, detached or both? It also needs to be untreated wood and/or non-toxic material.
